The Girl With Her Pencil

‘The Girl With Her Pencil’

While photographing in the neighborhoods surrounding the Casa we called home during our stay in Havana, I came across a lovely girl who was curiously watching me through her front window. She was quiet as a mouse and I didn’t even know I was being watched until I suddenly turned her way. Not shy at all, she burst into a beautiful smile and pointed to my camera. I politely asked if I could take her photograph and she nodded, leaving the window for a quick moment and returning with a pencil in hand. It appeared she wanted to be photographed with her pencil and I was happy to oblige. When I showed her the photograph in the back of the camera she appeared satisfied, nodded and said ‘Gracias!’
